Description

Data for the investigation (images and transcription of the epigrams of the arch for the entrance of the viceroy of Las Amarillas in Puebla (1755), from the canvas attributed to José Joaquín Magón.

This record compiles the data that formed the basis of the research for the article “La entrada del marqués de las Amarillas en Puebla (1755), iconografía y sermón políticogratulatorio” (2021) by Judith Farré Vidal. The study examines the entry into Puebla of the Marqués de las Amarillas (1755) as viceroy of New Spain. The iconographic program of the arch erected for the entrance into Puebla Cathedral was designed by the magistral canon and preacher Andrés de Arce y Miranda. The printed version of the iconographic program has not been preserved, but the design can be analyzed through the painting attributed to José Joaquín Magón, held in the Guillermo Tovar de Teresa Fund of the Museo Soumaya–Fundación Carlos Slim Collection in Mexico City. In a novel approach, the study examines the arch in relation to the sermon that Arce himself delivered in the Cathedral on October 29 as a tribute and welcome to the viceroy: “To Preserve a Kingdom in Peace”. Below are the images and the transcription of the mottos and epigrams that make up the arch erected to welcome the Marqués de las Amarillas in Puebla de los Ángeles (1755).
