Archives of Contemporary Literature of the Tomás Navarro Tomás Library

Archivos de Literatura Contemporánea (Contemporary Literature Archives) is the name given in 1932 to the philology subsection headed by Pedro Salinas within the Centre for Historical Studies, whose purpose was to publish the journal Índice Literario. This publication was intended to be a reference point for contemporary literary production and ‘to provide accurate and truthful information to the large audience of Hispanists scattered throughout the world, who often do not receive daily news of our production,’ providing an analysis of literary works and critical reviews published in the press.

All materials gathered between 1932 and 1936 to support the production of Índice Literario and other publications on Spanish literature form part of the collection known as Archivos de Literatura Contemporánea (Contemporary Literature Archives). This collection, consisting of 25 installation units, contains folders organised by author name that preserve press clippings about their lives and works, compiled thanks to the work of professionals such as María Galvarriato and José María Quiroga Plá, who were part of this section.

Most of the clippings are from periodicals such as Política, El Sol, Democracia (León), Ahora, Mundo gráfico and Luz, among others. Although most of the folders are dedicated to compiling information about a particular author, in some cases texts about other literary figures and movements have also been included.

Five datasets containing bibliographic records from the digitisation of the Tomás Navarro Tomás Library's Contemporary Literature Archives collection are shared. The data has been extracted using a query on ALMA, the library management system currently used by the CSIC, to extract the bibliographic data in .xml format. From this initial raw file, an .xslx file containing three tables has been generated. All of them offer the same information, but with different headings (in MARC format, their name in Spanish and their name in English) to make them easier to understand for non-library users. In addition, a new .xlsx file has been created without the fields with empty content: ‘ALC-Bibliografico-Tratado.xlsx’. These files are also in tsv format.
